The Corner Presents: Women in Hip Hop

At the very inception of hip-hop culture, women have always been at the forefront of the genre. However, they haven’t always been acknowledged and treated with the same respect as their male counterparts. Though today’s female hip-hop artists have faced misogyny head-on, these women have emerged as strong, multifaceted and empowering artists who carry on the legacy of those who came before them while uplifting each other.

Charlotte’s Hip Hop scene often celebrates its male artists and pioneers, but it’s time to give the women their flowers. And that is exactly what Amy Goudy of The Corner plans to do.

Amy Goudy, owner of The Corner, strives to add some culture to the local scene with the experience of The Corner, a higher end hip-hop clothing, art boutique and event space. Amy, affectionately known as “Miss Amy” is no newcomer to Charlotte’s hip-hop community.

The former manager of hip-hop collective Forever FC booked and promoted shows for years, contributing to the growth of a number of artists, including Charlotte’s own Lute

West and Well$. She wanted to create a shop that reflected her love for the culture. “I’m not looking to make this my retirement; I’m doing it because I love the culture,” Goudy said. “I believe in hip hop as an artistic expression, and that’s what I want to bring here: A space for creatives, a space for artists, a space for musicians to feel comfortable and vibe together.”
