Mixed Metaphors Productions, the two-time Best in the Nest award winning artist collective that brought you SwimCap and FixaPlate welcomes you to Kudzu: A Story of Belonging. What we create together during Charlotte Shout is the seed from which our story grows. Roam the vault and immerse(sive) yourself in Kudzu: A Story of Belonging. Find your way home through self-guided experiences and paid pop-up performances.

What does it mean to call Charlotte home? Kudzu: A Story of Belonging explores the intersection of housing justice and home. Travel from loan to home as you listen, speak, and do in this interactive theatrical environment.

In her book belonging, bell hooks asks, “When can we say we truly belong?” Drawing on her theoretical framework Kudzu: A Story of Belonging imagines the future by exploring the nuances of the present housing crisis through the lens of American myth-making. What stories do we tell ourselves about being a Charlottean?

Premiering in its entirety August 2024 we will create new stories of belonging by tracing the myths of our past and asking who has a right to call Charlotte home. Combining devised theatre, installation art, and music, Kudzu: A Story of Belonging: will imagine Charlotte’s future by entwining our current narratives of who belongs in Charlotte to the myths of our ancestors. These stories will unfold in the dappled sun beneath the vines as displaced Charlotteans create new homes in Kudzu: A Story of Belonging.
